Pool Test Kits

Pool seasons are always best during the summer or even at the beginning of the warm weather. This will also be the need to check your water levels and water quality. These pool test kits are fairly easy to use if you follow the directions. There is a particular kit, that tests your pool water’s pH balance,  total chlorine, total bromine, acid demand, and total alkalinity.

Using pool test kits will help you identify your pools needs and prevents over-treating with too many chemicals. This will help you maintain the proper chemical balance in your pool water and it also helps you keep your pool equipment in great condition. It can prevent surface damage and other common problems such as cloudy water and buildup of harmful bacteria.

It is said that the pH scale goes from 0 to 14, where pH 7 is neutral. If the pH is above 7, the water is basic; if it is below 7 the water is acid. The optimum pH for pool water is 7.4, since this is the same as the pH in human eyes and mucous membranes. A pH of 7.4 also gives good chlorine disinfection. If your water pH is higher than 8, anyone who swims in your pool is at risk of skin rashes. While with low pH, this can cause skin irritation and make your eyes burn if you open them under water. Making it possible for dangerous bacteria to survive. It can also hurt your pool, causing the metal to corrode and vinyl linings to wrinkle.

Pool alkalinity is one of the many factors that affect the water quality of your swimming pool. Total alkalinity is closely related to pH, measuring the pool’s ability to neutralize acids. In the proper range of 80 ppm to 150 ppm, total alkalinity keeps the pH level stable.

One of the most important steps of swimming pool maintenance is water balance. Generally, understanding water balance can also be one of the most confusing processes of pool maintenance. Because of its complexity, some new pool owners may not know everything they have to do to keep their pool water safe, comfortable and corrosion free.

After testing, don’t forget to rinse your plastic tester in a sink (never in your pool), leave it dry, then pack up the kit and put it in a cool, dry place, up high away from children and pets. Some experts suggest using your pool test kit weekly during the swimming season.
